Communication today is split between email, instant messages and enterprise social networks that feel as stale as LinkedIn ("Thanks to X Inc. for letting me give this long speech you weren't invited to").
Lucky for us, things are about to change again. Chat has announced HUGE changes and will become more social, more purposeful, more open and more managed. Take a look!
Also rolling out now - Spaces can now have short descriptions, to let others know what this is about - how about links?
Make sure everyone gets leadership messages by pinning them to the top of a Space.
More content requires solid ways to search and discover. Chat's search is evolving to meet Google Workspace standards.
Do you run a help desk? Office hours for people to drop in? Q&A Spaces before your project goes live? Soon, you can do away with invitations if you want.
When Chat was launched, people clamored for Slack-like inline replies, so you could instantly comment on messages and turn them into their own conversations. XS just announced it's coming.
Like Meet, Chat will be endlessly scalable and address many scenarios: 1:1 conversations, small Spaces for your working group, large Spaces where your entire office posts announcements to company-wide Spaces. Reading between the lines, we can see a continuum being implemented: closely managed Spaces for restricted information, today's model of democratic Spaces where everyone is equal and can invite others, to completely open Spaces.
Web based, device independent, free of fat clients: Chat's modern interface will get another facelift to prepare for all the new features.
All those features and new Spaces will need room. Today, Chat splits "Chat" and "Spaces" within the same list. A dedicated side panel to toggle between them is rolling out.
The entire organization will use Chat - you can make a career by building Chat integrations, or strengthen discoverability of your service.
Your clients are on Google Workspace - conversations with them can now happen where they belong, in Google Chat.
Google is going all-in on Chat, too:
Currents will join Chat next year, once the social features are ready
Hangouts is finally being shut down, freeing up resources to support Chat.
Social networking in companies will never look the same again. We already see lively Spaces with thousands of members while traditional social networks decline - the Chat revolution is in full swing and will get bigger. Hold on to your hats, and thank you for reading!
