Cloud Next'22 wrapped - here are the key takeaways for Google Workspace. How many companies use it today? Where will future growth come from? And which challenges is Google Workspace adapting to?
Some people think Google Workspace is used by 5 startups, Google being one of them. Others are surprised that there are still companies not using it. The real number is: Google Workspace is adding one million paying companies per year - this rate has been constant since 2015. The probability that your next client, employer or new hire is on Workspace increases.
Google Workspace is uniquely well-positioned for the future. Companies are well-advised to align their strategy with the future job market.
Worldwide, 150m students are enrolled in Google Classroom, learning and collaborating with state-of-the-art software. In the US, 30-35m or 40-50% of enrolled children are.
This is not personal preference (as in 3 billion Gmail users). The next generation of knowledge workers is trained in Google Workspace from their time in university, in the army, in volunteer organizations.
You would expect this cohort to start building companies on Google Workspace - and that is happening: 65% of EU unicorns, 96% of Forbes' next billion-dollar startups use Google Workspace. If you want to sell to tomorrow's Fortune 500 company, your path is charted.
A 2022 study across US colleges by independent research firm College Pulse found that most respondents had clear preferences.
Preference stemmed not from what other people were already using and did not vary by field of study - engineers prefer Sheets and future doctors prefer Slides. Ease of use (86%) was the main reason for choosing software.
In the current economic climate of high inflation and low unemployment, you want to reduce spending and be an attractive employer.
Storytelling beats font sizes: You will see new tools to generate ideas quickly, such as AI that generates video intros for Google Slides, more reusable building blocks and innovative ways to stay on brand easily. And 86% of people prefer "easy".
The future is video: The only growing social media platforms are video-based. When you prepare for your next certification, you might use YouTube tutorials. Yet ... How are you communicating? (Here I am, typing this.) Google Workspace will make it easy to create good-looking videos and blur the distinction between videos and documents.
Digital sovereignty is front and center: Google defines digital sovereignty very broadly - as sovereignty over data (what good is a datacenter if the government can walk in), operations (I know and approve my cloud provider's access) and software (avoiding being locked into proprietary software).
It's a huge topic in the cloud world, and Google has good answers. There'll be more to say about that - if you're curious, the short video on the side is a great start.
The numbers above validate the reasons why companies choose Google Workspace and treat it as a strategic project that needs to be sustained with change management. Even if the playing field is tilting towards it - onboarding, training and listening is key to leverage an organization's investment.
